The Emperor Constantine is the legendary ancestor of the early Welsh royal lines. He became thje sole emperor of the Roman world by 323 A.D., after eliminating his five rivals for power. Before a decisive battle with one of his rivals, he is supposed to have seen at noonday a vision of a flaming cross, together with the legend "by this conquer". The cross became Constantine's battle symbol, and Christianity henceforth received favored treatment in his empire.
Constantine's actions helped to bring about the final apostasy of the Christian Chruch. Although he was not baptized until shortly before his heath, Constantine demonstrated his supremancy over the the ecclesiastical affairs of the church as the President of the Council of Nicaea in 325. There he called for compromises that served the purpose of bringhing peace to the state but chaos to the church, for the comprosmises actually amounted to a proclamation of new doctrine that no side could fully support.
Under Constantine, the Roman government was transformed from a quasi-constitutional monarchy to an absolute despotism. This spirit of absolute authority was to prevail in both church and state for many centuries.
See page Seven of Lines of Adam.
Constantine Ruled the Roman Empire (323-337),and was baptized a Christian just before his death.
He called a council of Bishops at Nicea, to help settle a quarrel in the Christian Church - about the The Father and his son Jesus Christ; This council drew up the "Nicene Creed", which is still used by many churches today.
He turned the rule of the Roman Empire over to his three remaining sons, he had put to death his oldest son, Crispus, and his second wife, Fausta.
