WILLIAM I, THE LION
(King of Scots)

He reigned from 1165-1214. He was 22 years old when he succeed his brother to the throne. Although he was a physically strong man (in Gaelic, he is dubbed "the Brawny"), his nickname of "the Lion" probably refers to his adoption of the lion rampant in his coat of arms. He had several illegitimate children, but he remained unmarried until 1186. Then he had to wait a further 12 years (by which time h was 56) before his wife produced a son. As a precaution against possible objection to his son's succession while still a minor, William held an assembly at Musselburgh in 1201 at which the infant
son's rights were recognized. On his deathbed, William exacted further promises from his leading barons to the same effect. The Lion's greatest domestic achievement was in finally bringing the nor h of Scotland under royal control. William was obsessed with an unrealistic claim to Northumberland. When Henry II's sons rebelled
against their father in 1173, he joined the rebellion, demanding Northumberland as the price of his loyalty. The move proved disastrous. He was captured in 1174 and, with his legs chained together beneath his horse's belly, was taken to meet Henry at Falai e in France. He had no option but to accept humiliating terms: he ha to pay homage to Henry for the Kingdom of Scotland -- which meant th t Scottish barons owed primary allegiance to the King of England -- an surrendered into English hands a number of key castles, includingEdinburgh and Stirling. Edinburgh castle was returned to William's wife on the marriage in 1186.
