d. c.853 B.C., king of Israel (c.874-c.853 B.C.), son and successor of Omri. One of the greatest kings of the northern kingdom, he was killed in a war against Damascus. The biblical account of Ahab's reign is mostly concerned with its religious aspects, especially his marriage to Jezebel, a willful woman of Tyre who was attached to foreign cults and behavior. To the devout she represented evil, and she met her match in ELIJAH.
