in the BIBLE, ancestor of the Hebrews, the younger of the twin sons of ISAAC and REBECCA. By bargain and trickery, Jacob got the birthright and the blessing that was intended for his twin, ESAU. Jacob had two wives, Leah and her younger sister, RACHEL. On the banks of the Jabbok, he wrestled with an angel and received the name of Israel. He was the ancestor of the 12 tribes of Israel (see ISRAEL, TRIBES OF).

in the BIBLE, the favored son of JACOB and RACHEL. He was sold into slavery by his brothers, who were jealous of their father's favoritsm toward him. Taken to Egypt, Joseph rose to authority in the house of Potiphar, only to be imprisoned on the false accusations of Potiphar's wife. Released after interpreting Pharaoh's dream, Joseph rose in Pharaoh's favor. He was reunited with his family when, as governor of Egypt, he helped them during a famine.
