NAME David I MacM-lcolm/Scotland/
!Chart by Archibald F. Bennet
He reigned from 1124-1153. He like gardening, having a particular fascination for grafting. His sense of justice and duty are atteste to by the story that he once forwent a day's hunting (a considerable sacrifice in medieval times) in order to hear the suit of a humble petitioner. He devoted his long reign to modernizing the realm of Scotland. Realizing that wealth was the key to power, David encouraged trade and commerce by insisting on a uniform system of weights and measures, minting a standard coinage at Berwick and
Roxburgh, and establishing a number of royal burghs. Although there is some evidence that the jury system dates from Davis's reign, most law was administered by the king in person or by his local representatives. When he died, he controlled a well-ordered Scottis
kingdom which extended farther south than it had ever extended befor , or since.
