in the Bible. The Virgin, mother of JESUS, the principal saint, called Our Lady. Her name is the Hebrew Miriam. The events of her life mentioned in the NEW TESTAMENT include the archangel GABRIEL's annunciation to her of Jesus' birth; her visitation to Elizabeth, mother of JOHN THE BAPTIST; Jesus' nativity; and her station at the Cross upon which Jesus was crucified. According to Scripture she was first betrothed, then married, to St. JOSEPH and was the cousin of Elizabeth. Tradition has it that Mary was the daughter of Saints Joachim and Anne. From ancient times she has been highly honored by Christians.
