John Schoonover 786 WST= Westmoreland Co. pp 766-796 He served in the NY State Militia in the War of 1812 under Capt. Micajah Harding, Regiment of Col. Dobbing from Tioga County, NY. He was shot through his left wrist on 17 Sep 1814 while storming a British Battery at Fort Erie. On 22 Oct 1814, his left arm was amputated a "little below the elbow." On 27 Nov 1814, he was honorably discharged. His term of service was 6 months and 8 days, for which he received $50.06. Based on the records concerning his application for pension, his surname changed from "Schoonhoven" to "Schoonover" between late 1818 and mid-1821. However, the spellings apparently were supplied by others since he signed with a mark, X, on the pension documents, including his claim for an increase in his pension, dated 9 Nov 1866.
After his arm was amputated, he went "home" to Umyver. His first pension papers are dated 25 Aug 1820 from Scioto County, OH. One piece of correspondence is dated Jun 1821 from Portsmouth, OH. His pension was mailed to Piketon, OH in 1847. In May 1847, he lived in Pike County, OH and received his pension in Cincinnati, OH. His pension was transferred to MO on 4 Sep 1860.
Some correspondence is dated 26 Nov 1860 from Cainsville, Harrison County, MO.
Some of his legal papers were issued in Macon, Macon County, MO in Mar 1867. He resided in Cainsville, MO in Mar 1867.
