In 1712 Thomas Speakman, a Quaker, sailed from England to Pennsylvania. It is believed that he worked for Brinton family in Chester County, PA where he met and married William' Brinton's grandaughter, Ann Brinton Harry. I mention the Brinton name because, when William Brinton died, his son built an English style house on the family property. That house has been restored and is open to the public. I mention the Harry name because that family's line has been researched and is said to go back to Edward III, King of England.
Thomas Speakman (1690 - 1732) and Ann Brinton Harry bought 200 acres in Chester County. The original house is no longer standing, but the land is still in the hands of the Speakman family and is being operated as a Dairy farm. Thomas and Ann had 8 children: William, Hugh, Ann, Thomas, Ebenezer, Micajah and Joshua.
Most of this early history is detailed in a book written in 1930 "The Speakman Family in America" by Emma Speakman Webster.

The youngest son, Joshua Speakman (1731 - 1801) married Ann Miller and had 8 children: Hannah, Susannah, Ebenezer, James, Joanna, Thomas, Stephen and Phebe.
In 1755 Joshua moved his family (only had Hannah at that time) to York County, PA. Later, that portion of York County later became Adams County (Gettysburg area).
