!King of Scotland (1034-40), grandson of King Malcolm II Mackenneth (circa 953-1034), whom he succeeded. Before his accession to the Scottish throne he was ruler of the kingdom of Strathclyde. Macbeth, who ruled the neighboring kingdom of Moray and served Duncan as a general, killed him and became king of Scotland. Shakespeare's tragedy Macbeth is based on the struggle between the two kings.

/DUNCAN I/ (King of Scots)

He reigned from 1034-1040. His reign began the dynasty called the House of Dunkeld, which was in power from 1034-1290; during that period, Scotland not only maintained her status as an independent state but grew to be one of the better governed nations of western
Europe. On the death of Owen the Bold in 1018, Duncan became the Ki g of Strathclyde. So, when he was proclaimed King of Scotland in 1034 the kingdom of the southwest ceased to exist as an independent entit .
Following unsuccessful sallies into northern England in 1039, he wa killed in battle the next year by his more able cousin, Macbeth. Th battle may well have taken place near Birnam Woods, as protrayed by Shakespeare, for Duncan is said to have held court on Birnam Hill,
near Dunkeld.

During his reign he carried on almost constant warfare, most of which was successful. He gave support to his brother-in-law, Eadgar Atheling, in fighting William the Conqueror in Northumbria. In 1072 William invaded Scotland and succeeded in a temporary conquest of the country, returning to England after Malcolm did homage. Later, in 1091, Malcolm raided Northern England, in return for which William Rufus invaded Scotland and once more Malcolm did homage. In 1092, when in Gloucester, England, he declined to do homage and returned to Scotland in anger. He invaded Northumberland in 1093, but was ambuscaded near the Castle of Alnwick and slain.

His name was Donald Ban, or Donaldbane. He reigned jointly with his nephew, Edmund, from 1093-1097. He had spent most of his life exile in Ireland and the Western Isles. After his brother's death, he seized Edinburgh Castle with the support of Scotland's reactionary Celtic tribesmen and drove south Malcolm's sons by Margaret and the few English who had gathered at the court. In 1094, his nephew, Duncan, marched north with the support of William Rufus and deposed
him. Donald then allied with Duncan II's half-brother, Edmund, and won back the kingdom. He then managed to cling onto the crown for three more years, governing the land north of the Forth-Clyde line, but leaving the southern part to Edmund. In 1097, another of Malcolm's sons, Edgar, also backed by Rufus, captured Donald, blinde him and imprisoned him for life. It is said that, as a final gestur of revenge, Donald Ban had sufficient strength left in his old age t throttle David's elder son.
